Well, played D&D last night, Rappan Athuk as has been the case for the last 6 months or so.
Total party kill. Most players falling to their fellows, although one character did escape the lair of Scramge only to fall in an encounter with Dungie on his way out of the dungeon. I had been preparing this encounter for the past couple weeks, building those dungeon rooms from the hirst arts molds specifically and painting up a Vrock demon mini for this encounter. The dungeon tiles worked well and the mini was at least 80% done (it was delayed in getting to me, plus i'm not that fast a painter) but I thought the encounter was exciting and that aside from the deaths enjoyable.
Most of the players let me know that they don't want to go back into Rappan Athuk, and to tell the truth, I don't want to take them in there again real soon either. Things are depressing enough right now without going into such a death-trap.
So in an attempt at a somewhat lighter gaming experience we're starting new characters in the realms. I've picked up a new module that was recommended to me by Drenn that seems intriguing.

Pictures posted in the Gallery for Painted Miniatures showing my new Dungeon Tiles and rooms I made this weekend. I'm pretty happy with it since it's much cheaper than buying dwarven forge stuff and easy to do -- and much easier to customize.

Ok, so i'm thinking of fixing up the basement a bit, I had thought about a home-theater for a while, but technology is evolving so that I can get more bang for my buck in the family room than in a dedicated room in the basement. Plus theres always the fact that we don't watch all that many movies. So I was thinking, I've been gaming since I was in 8th grade. I'm probably not going to be quitting any time soon so maybe that'll be the direction I go.
So I'm soliciting input. What are the things that Absolutely Have to be included in a gaming room (RPGs in particular)?
First off is a big table, I was looking at the prices for a 4' x 8" table or thereabouts. Wow, them's some quite impressive numbers. However I found that it's much cheaper to get a ping-pong table (5' x 9' - plus folds up with wheels for easy ambulation). So I'm thinking of checking out my parent's old pingpong table and seeing if it's salvagable (though it doesn't have wheels, just folding legs).
The room will have some kind of carpeting for comfort, panel walls, probably some D&D/LOTR/EQ poster art. Several bookshelves. Also a dart board and backboard because it's gotta go somewhere and the space i'm thinking of is where the board is now. But what are the nifty cool things I'm not thinking of? let's keep in mind that i'm not independantly wealthy too. :) Hopefully some of you will have some ideas. One thing that will need changed is the electrical outlet situation. there's one on the outside wall and one in a light fixture in that area of the basement, I'd like to have at least one on each wall so that'll need to be added.
What else do I need to include in the uber-phat-mad-skilz-gamer-den?

When we play D&D we use miniatures, I greatly enjoy collecting and painting them, especially Reaper Miniatures. Having seen Dwarven Forge's Master Maze sets I purchased a couple sets as well for use in our games. Usually we use a battle-mat made of vinyl with wet erase markers though since the tiles take up time to set up and are moderately inconvenient to travel with.
When I can set things up ahead of time though I think they add quite a bit.
Last week I decided to try my hand at making my own tiles, so I purchased a couple of Hirst Arts molds These are rubber molds with which you can cast your own tiles out of plaster of paris, or dental plaster, or whatever. They came in on Friday and I spent a few hours Saturday and Sunday casting tiles to make the basic dungeon tiles on his site.
Wow, it's a blast, I went through about 4 pounds of plaster of paris and got 15 casts from each of the two molds I bought.
The only drawback is that you have to assemble and paint them after they're dry :) Not such a big deal really.
Just had to post about how much fun I've had doing that and how easy it is. So far I've created enough tiles to about equal one of the Master Maze room sets and monitarily it's about even, however with remaining construction time i'm in the hole. However, If I cast another I'll start to come out ahead since the plaster to cast those tiles cost me about $3. I'll have some pictures up in The galleries once I get some ready.

Alright another damn personality quiz
IT'S ALL CYD'S FAULT!!!
Star Trek Personality Test -- Results
Myers-Briggs would say that you are an ISFJ (Introvert, Sensor, Feeler, Judger). In Star Trek language, you share a basic personality configuration with Beverly Crusher and Chakotay.
People like you are generally highly nurturing and caring. You're gentle and thoughtful, but also cautious, especially about exposing your inner self. You're highly protective of your privacy and share yourself with others as a sign of love. Once comfortable, however, you are quite affectionate. You also desire steady and unstinting love in return.
You're very literal and maintain a high awareness of the physical world. You are quite likely to have a highly developed sense of spirituality.
You are uncompromising about your personal standards and easily offended, especially when you do not feel appreciated or when people violate your personal space. You are diligent and conscientious, organized and decisive. You respond well to politeness. You enjoy productive routine.
Your primary goal in life is helping people in real ways. Your reward is stability in your daily life and people who support your feelings. You cannot have friends who would ever ask you to compromise your values.
Good careers for your type include primary care physician, chief medical officer, elementary school worker, guidance counselor, special education teacher, and genealogist.
If I remember correctly I've been an ISFJ in both myers-briggs tests that i've taken roughly 5 and 10 years ago.

phooie this sucks. I spend all week going to work (except for wednesday) trying not to get sick. Go to the mad about the arts reception last night. Have a couple sips of an Austrailian Merlot which really tasted foul. And all night my stomach tastes like Merlot & Hurl. So now it's saturday and i'm nauseous, whiny, achey, :-P
Actually last night was the most fun i've had at the MAtA thing in several years.
So now it's the weekend and i'm sick. Glad we didnt' have big plans but still.
Going to try eating some chicken noodle-os.
One good thing came out of last night though, I brought home probably at least 30 empty wine bottles. Have yet to count them .
