Actually Tuesday night in Indianapolis
Well I was the only person walking through the gates when I reached the indy airport and there were student screeners on duty, so that meant I got searched. The whole shoes and full body scan treatment, all in all took only a couple minutes and I was on my way. Had dinner at the airport café which was surprisingly good, a chicken & sausage sandwich with a rum sauce.
So now I’ve got an hour before boarding to read. Which ain’t bad as an hour goes.

Actually Monday night in Indianapolis
Did you ever notice (probably you haven’t if you’re like 90% of the rest of the country that catches a cat-nap while the pre-flight instructions are being pantomimed out or played on the monitors) there’s a point when they’re explaining that should there be a need, oxygen masks will fall from the cabin roof yadda yadda yadda, well here it is the woman is sitting next to a young girl and she places the mask over her own face while the little girl is smiling away and she remains smiling while her adult chaperone calmly puts the mask over her face. Why don’t they show a realistic situation where the woman grabs both masks and realizes that she can’t use both of them at once, so she might as well help the little crumb-cruncher who meanwhile is blithely bouncing off the cabin walls while screaming her bloody head off, see now that would hold your attention.
Still and all, it looked silly with her smiling as the oxygen mask was placed over her face.
Flight left on time which is always a plus, I haven’t flown since last September 28th or something like that. And I noticed a much higher presence of uniformed screeners, guards, and various other checkers at both airports this time.
We had one hell of a captain though, He liked flying with the windows open. It was so cold in the cabin that two ducks and a goose flew in through the open windows to get warm and realized that it was warmer outside the plane. And they were wearing down jackets!

Mort Walker and the folks at Beetle Bailey are offering an art print commemorating the Flag for any $8.00 or more donation to the U.S.O. until November 1.
If the flag is important to you and you feel what the USO does is important, go take a look and snag this offer up. Can't wait to get mine.

I've decided to create bulletin boards for the gaming content that has been appearing in the blog. So if you're interested click on that little button above that says Game Forum and you'll be taken to the new Wolf & Moose game forum where the various campaign notes can be cataloged and organized.

OK this is just too cute, If you wear wings to faire... beware
According to the vikings, the fairy in the picture had no idea what was happening behind her, although her friends did. I wonder if she's seen this picture yet :)

Just a quick note to thank Alex Mr. Nosuch for his help in getting this blog working quickly. I shall always remember that http: calls are flexible but slow and that directory references are fast.
Thanks again, everyone head on over to Nosuch.org and drive up Alex's bandwidth bill for the month :)

I've decided to start another batch of mead. Not that my first batch is done or anything, it'll be another three months or so before it's ready to be a young mead. But I'm thinking ahead this time. If I start a Methyglin now, it should be ready for Christmas 2003. I've decided to do a recipe from Vicky Rowe's Got Mead site called Fall Methyglin* . It sounds like it'll be a nice mead to maybe heat up a bit for those winter nights. So we'll see how it goes.
My first batch of mead, the blackberry melomel is coming along. I think i'll be bottling it next month. It's not as sweet as I'd like so I'll have to back-sweeten it at bottle time I think.
* a Methyglin is a spiced mead; a Melomel is a fruit mead

From boingboing.net and originally optics.org
The pick of this week's hottest patent applications in the world of photonics.
• The idea of an "invisibility cloak" has made the leap from science fiction books to an international patent application. Ray Alden of North Carolina is attempting to patent a "three dimensional cloaking process and apparatus" for concealing objects and people (WO 02/067196).
The idea hinges on carefully mimicking background lighting conditions to help render an object invisible, similar to how a chameleon blends in with its surroundings. The rear and front surfaces of an object are covered with a material containing an array of photodetectors and light emitters respectively.
The photodetectors on the rear surface are used to record the intensity and color of a source of illumination behind the object. The light emitters on the front surface then generate light beams that exactly mimic the same measured intensity, color and trajectory. The result is that an observer looking at the front of the object appears to see straight through it.
OK this is Frelling cool! I want one, make that two if they work well :)
